About Virtualization, VDI, SBC, Application Compatibility and anything else I feel like
A while ago I started exploring the firmware of an RNS510 Navigation unit. The RNS510 is an OEM navigation system, manufactured by Continental Automotive and is used in several models of Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda Cars
When the units is booting it shows a startup logo and I wanted to replace this logo with my own picture.
I have some experience in this area since I did this before on the predecessor of the RNS510, the RNS MFD2 DVD system.
When loading the firmware the logo’s are loaded into the units flash memory (and not to the internal hard drive).
I have found the files that contain the images and how they are encoded. I also managed to extract the images and convert them to a bitmap that can be displayed in Windows.
I also know how to recode a bitmap into the RNS510’s native format however there’s other stuff in the same files that I have not yet deciphered so I am afraid to overwrite something there.
At the moment I don’t have enough time to finish this stuff so I am posting the logo’s here as proof of concept and hopefully someone can continue this or knows more (contact me).

Hello,
Looks like your well ahead with your understanding of the startup logos. Id say if you can do more work figuring it out and perhaps then make a small piece of software that people can use to convert images of their own and then with a bunch of instructions how to get it into the RNS-510, maybe it requires a modified install disc whereby all firmware gets reinstalled with the modified files on it.
Im sure people would pay for this ability.
Id happily donate when I get back to this in a few days.
Allan
Do you know if the latest RNS 510 MFD3 is compatible with a 2011 Multivan 103 kw Tdi
Yep,
The RNS-510 also works ok in an Amarok, I put one in mine.
A couple of error codes which u can override and its all pretty much plug and play, the climatronic shows up on the screen also.
That’s interesting. Allthough I was looking for even deeper hacking attempts – I wondered why nobody had ever tried to install linux on an RNS 510. Did you find out something in that direction? Is it feasible in your opinion?
